He dared, Chloe acknowledged disgustedly, glaring furiously across the room at Fergus as he was shown into the sitting-room later that evening, the family all gathered in there to have a glass of champagne prior to leaving for the restaurant.
She had no idea how Fergus’s interview with her father had gone, had only seen her father for a few minutes on her return from shopping. But he hadn’t seemed particularly disturbed.
Although Chloe couldn’t say she’d felt the same way once he had told her that Fergus would be meeting them here at eight o’clock this evening!
‘For goodness’ sake, smile,’ Fergus told her, having crossed to her side, a glass of champagne already in his hand, looking very handsome and distinguished in his black dinner suit. ‘Your family will think you don’t want me here,’ he warned.
Chloe looked up at him with wary eyes, making no effort to hide her hostility. ‘I don’t,’ she snapped.
Fergus laughed softly. ‘Let’s try not to spoil this evening for your sister and her husband,’ he responded, before bending to kiss her lightly on the cheek. ‘Window-dressing,’ he explained before she could flinch away.
Her eyes sparkled angrily. ‘Don’t try and use me to get to my father or my family,’ she grated.
His gaze hardened. ‘I didn’t mean that sort of window-dressing, Chloe,’ he rasped, drawing a steadying breath before turning to look at the others gathered in the room. ‘Don’t you think you should introduce me to your sister and her husband?’
‘No,’ she answered flatly.
She didn’t think he should be here at all. That was the whole problem. And if he couldn’t see that—
‘Chloe,’ he began, slowly turning back to face her, ‘if you recall I asked to have dinner with you this evening; your family’s involvement is purely incidental.’
‘Really?’ she derided scornfully.
‘Really,’ he echoed hardly, his hand that wasn’t holding the champagne glass reaching out to firmly grasp her forearm as he turned her to face him. ‘I don’t work that way, Chloe. And you can believe that or not, it’s your choice.’
She was so angry with him at the moment that she couldn’t even think straight, let alone make any choices!
He had no right to be here, socially mixing with her family as if he were a close friend of hers. That was what hurt the most; no matter what he might try to claim to the contrary, Fergus was merely using her.
‘I choose not,’ she told him coldly, bending to put down her empty champagne glass on the nearby coffee-table.
Fergus eyed the glass with raised brows. ‘I thought you didn’t drink…?’
Her mouth thinned humourlessly. ‘For some strange reason, this evening I feel in need of it! In fact,’ she bit out caustically, ‘I think I’ll have a refill!’ She picked up her glass and crossed the room to where her father was just refilling Penny’s glass.
Older than Chloe by ten years, Penny was more like their father, tall and elegant, her dark hair boyishly short, three pregnancies having done little to diminish the slenderness of her body.
